instruction; the dhyāna that displays the lower realms to evildoers; the dhyāna that provides confidence to sentient beings who lack confidence; the dhyāna that provides mindfulness to sentient beings who are forgetful; the dhyāna that formulates unerring treatises, poetry, and metrics in order for the true Dharma to remain for a long time; the dhyāna that produces the worldly crafts and occupations that are meaningful and beneficial to sentient beings, such as writing, calculating, accounting, numeration, and palmistry, as well as thrones, chairs, parasols, shoes, and so on, and various kinds of protective devices; and the dhyāna that radiates rays of light in order to immediately dispel the suffering of the lower realms for sentient beings born in the lower realms. What is the purified dhyāna? There are ten kinds: dhyāna purified through worldly purification, which lacks attachment to meditative savoring; dhyāna purified through transcendent purification, which is undefiled; dhyāna purified through preparation; dhyāna purified through obtaining the actual absorption; dhyāna purified through the higher qualities distinctive of the actual absorption; dhyāna purified through mastery over entering, abiding, and emerging; dhyāna purified through mastery over reverse entry and re-absorption; dhyāna purified through mastery over emanation by means of the superknowledges; dhyāna purified through freedom from all doctrinal views; and dhyāna purified through abandoning afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations.
