Fifteen additional ships of war arrive in India from Lisbon. Almeida is killed during his return to Portugal. Albuquerque and Coutinho, on the 2d of January, attack Calicut. They are repulsed, Coutinho and eighty Europeans losing their lives on the occasion: among the wounded is Alfonso Albuquerque.
