etac ca kṛtyapañcakaṃ śuddhādhvaviṣaye sākṣāc chivakartṛkaṃ kṛcchrādhvaviṣaye tv anantādidvāreṇeti vivekaḥ/ tad uktaṃ śrīmatkiraṇe —
And this fivefold cosmic activity has Śiva as its direct agent in the sphere of the pure path (śuddhādhvan), but takes place through Ananta and others in the sphere of the painful path (kṛcchrādhvan); this is the distinction. That has been said in the venerable Kiraṇa:
