'Or it is metaphorical, because of non-knowers of the Self; for it shows thus.'
Therefore, passages of praise and so forth that seem contradictory are to be construed in view of an auxiliary factor to knowledge. But in the case of the Purāṇas and similar texts, when there is a contradiction with scripture and the like, even a secondary meaning is appropriate.
As in the Vārāha Purāṇa and other texts: / 'Having displayed deception, magic, and contradictory practices, / delude all people quickly, O Maheśvara.'
