‘Affected’ means modified, obtained, or consecrated. As for the practical purpose, according to the prima facie view, the pounding whose instrument is paddy, which is transferred by extended application to the cooked dish of panicum seeds (priyaṅgu), would apply. Why?
‘For a substance heard in the principal does not sublate a substance of an auxiliary,
just as in the case of the butter for the preliminary sacrifices; therefore, there would be no sublation of paddy in the pounding.’
In the established view, however, they are sublated. Why?
‘The substance suitable for the principal is joined also with the preparatory treatments;
therefore, the panicum seeds are to be consecrated by pounding and all the rest.’ (1)
4. Section on the Non-Principal Character of Sweeping and Other Acts
‘An action, however, would pertain merely to an unseen duty when there is no tangible result, like the preliminary sacrifices.’
