atha yad uktam - artho 'vagamyate gāvyādibhyaḥ, ata eṣām apy anādiarthena saṃbandha iti. tadaśaktir eṣāṃ gamyate. gośabdam uccārayitukāmena kenacid aśaktyā gāvīty uccāritam. apareṇa jñātaṃ sāsnādimān asya vivakṣitaḥ, tad arthaṃ gaur ity uccārayitukāmo gāvīty uccārayati. [78] tataḥ śikṣitvāpare 'pi sāsnādim iti vivakṣite gāvīty uccārayanti. tena gāvyādibhyaḥ sāsnādimān avagamyate. anurūpo hi gāvyādigośabdasya.

Now, as to what was said—that the meaning is understood from *gāvī* and the rest, and therefore they too have a beginningless relation to the meaning—that is understood to be due to their incapacity. By someone wishing to utter the word *go*, *gāvī* was uttered out of incapacity. Another understood: 'An entity possessing a dewlap is intended by him; for that purpose, wishing to utter *gaur*, he utters *gāvī*.' [78] Having learned from that, others also, when the entity possessing a dewlap is intended to be expressed, utter *gāvī*. Thereby the entity possessing a dewlap is understood from *gāvī* and the rest; for *gāvī* and the rest are similar to the word *go*.
