ata eva hi vibhaktivyatyaye 'pi pratyayo bhavati. aśmakair āgacchāmīty aśmakaśabdaikadeśa upalabdhe, aśmakebhya ity eva śabdaḥ smaryate. tato 'śmakebhya ity eṣo 'rtha upalabhyata iti. evaṃ gāvyādidarśanād gośabdasmaraṇam, tataḥ sāsnādimān avagamyate.
For this very reason, cognition arises even when there is an interchange of a case-ending. When a part of the word *aśmaka* is perceived in 'I come *aśmakaiḥ*', the word *aśmakebhyaḥ* alone is remembered. Thence this meaning, namely *aśmakebhyaḥ*, is apprehended. Likewise, from the perception of *gāvī* and the like, there is recollection of the word *go*, and from that, the entity possessing a dewlap is understood.
