yavamayaś caruḥ; vārāhī upānahau; vaitase kaṭe prājāpatyān saṃcinotīti yavavarāhavetasaśabdān samāmananti. tatra kecid dīrghaśūkeṣu yavaśabdaṃ prayuñjante, kecit priyaṅguṣu. varāhaśabdaṃ kecit śūkare, kecit kṛṣṇaśakunau. vetasaśabdaṃ kecid vañjulake, kecij jambvām. tatrobhayathā padārthāvagamād vikalpaḥ.

They recite [in scripture] the words 'barley' (yava), 'boar' (varāha), and 'cane' (vetasa) thus: 'A caru of barley', 'Two boar[-skin] shoes', and 'Upon a cane mat he piles the [cups] dedicated to Prajāpati'. There, some people apply the word 'yava' to long-awned grains (barley), while others apply it to panic seed (priyaṅgu). Some apply the word 'varāha' to a hog, others to a black bird. Some apply the word 'vetasa' to the cane (vañjula), others to the rose-apple (jambū). There, since the meaning of the word is comprehended in both ways, there is an option.
