16.2
acetanasya karaṇasya buddher jñānaṃ vṛttiḥ cetanasyākartur upalabdhir iti yuktiviruddham arthaṃ pratyācakṣāṇaka ivedam āha ---
As if rejecting the notion contrary to reasoning that cognition is a function of an insentient instrument, the intellect, and apprehension belongs to a sentient non-agent, [the author] says this:
16.3
buddhir upalabdhir jñānam ity anarthāntaram ||
NyS 1.1.15: Intellect, apprehension, and cognition are not different in meaning.
16.4
nācetanasya karaṇasya buddher jñānaṃ bhavitum arhati, tad dhi cetanaṃ syāt, ekaś cāyaṃ cetano dehendriyasaṃghātavyatirikta iti/
Cognition cannot belong to an insentient instrument, the intellect; for that would [then] be sentient, and this sentient entity is single, distinct from the aggregate of body and sense organs.
16.5
prameyalakṣaṇārthasya vākyasyānyārthaprakāśanam upapattisāmarthyād iti//15//
By the force of reasoning, a statement intended to define an object of valid cognition illumines another matter as well.
