183.2
vikāradharmitve nityatvābhāvāt kālāntare vikāropapatteś cāpratiṣedhaḥ ||
There is no refutation, because if they have the property of modification, eternality is absent, and because modification occurs after an interval of time.
183.3
taddharmavikalpād iti na yuktaḥ pratiṣedhaḥ/ na khalv vikāradharmakaṃ kiñcin nityam upalabhyata iti varṇopalabdhivad iti na yuktaḥ pratiṣedhaḥ/ avagrahe hi dadhi atreti prayujya ciraṃ sthitvā tataḥ saṃhitāyāṃ prayuṅkte dadhy atreti/
The refutation on the ground 'because of variation in their properties' is not proper. For nothing that has the property of modification is apprehended as eternal, so the refutation claiming 'like the apprehension of speech-sounds' is not proper. For in [reading with] a pause, one pronounces 'dadhi atra', and after pausing for a long time, one then pronounces in continuous sandhi 'dadhy atra'.
183.4
ciranivṛtte cāyam ivarṇe yakāraḥ prayujyamānaḥ kasya vikāra iti pratīyate, kāraṇābhāvāt kāryābhāva iti anuyogaḥ prasajyata iti//53//
And when the sound 'i' has ceased long before, as the sound 'ya' is being pronounced, of what is it recognized to be the modification? The objection follows that in the absence of a cause, there is absence of the effect.
