gandhādayaḥ pṛthivyādiguṇā ity uddiṣṭam uddeśaś ca pṛthivyādīnām ekaguṇatve cānekaguṇatve ca samāna ity ata āha ---
It has been stated that smell and the rest are qualities of earth and the other [elements]; and this statement applies equally whether earth and the others have one quality or many qualities; therefore [the author] states:

gandharasarūpasparśaśabdānāṃ sparśaparyantāḥ pṛthivyāḥ ||
Of smell, taste, color, touch, and sound, those ending with touch belong to earth.
