A provisional tenet is the examination of a specific detail of an object based on the provisional acceptance of it without examination.
32.4
yatra kiñcid arthajātam aparīkṣitam abhyupagamyate, astu dravyaṃ śabdaḥ sa tu nityo 'thānitya iti? dravyasya sato nityatānityatā vā tadviśeṣaḥ parīkṣyate, so 'bhyupagamasiddhāntaḥ svabuddhyatiśayacikhyāpayiṣayā parabuddhyavajñānāc ca pravartata iti//31//
Where a certain object is accepted without examination, [as in]: “Let sound be a substance; but is it eternal or non-eternal?”—the specific detail of the existent substance, namely its eternality or non-eternality, is examined; that is a provisional tenet, which proceeds from a desire to display the excellence of one's own intellect and from disregard for the intellect of the other. //31
