The body and all parts of the body are pervaded by the arising of consciousness, so that there is no part where consciousness does not arise; since parts of the body, just like the body itself, are conscious, a multiplicity of conscious subjects would follow. There, just as the distribution of pleasure, pain, and cognition serves as the mark for the multiplicity of conscious subjects in different bodies, so too should it be even within a single body; but it is not. Therefore, consciousness is not a quality of the body.
