99.2
parīkṣitaṃ pratyakṣam/ anumānam idānīṃ parīkṣyate ---
Perception has been examined. Inference is now examined:
99.3
rodhopaghātasādṛśyebhyo vyabhicārād anumānam apramāṇam ||
Inference is not a means of valid cognition, because of deviation due to damming, damage, and resemblance.
99.4
apramāṇam iti ekadāpy arthasya na pratipādakam iti/ rodhād api nadī pūrṇā gṛhyate, tadā copariṣṭād vṛṣṭo deva iti mithyānumānam/ nīḍopaghātād api pipīlikāṇḍasañcāro bhavati, tadā ca bhaviṣyati vṛṣṭir iti mithyānumānam iti/ puruṣo 'pi mayūravāśitam anukaroti tadā 'pi śabdasādṛśyān mithyānumānaṃ bhavati//37//
‘Not a means of valid cognition’ means that it does not make an object known even once. A river is observed to be full even due to damming, and then ‘the god has rained upstream’ is a false inference. The carrying of ants' eggs occurs even due to the damage of their nest, and then ‘there will be rain’ is a false inference. A human also imitates the cry of a peacock, and then, too, there is a false inference due to resemblance of sound. //37
