"The internal organ": intellect, ego-maker, and mind; it is threefold according to the distinction between the great principle and the rest. And "external tenfold": the five faculties of cognition and the five faculties of action—this external instrument is tenfold. In that regard, that which is called the object of the internal organ is the object of experiential consumption for the intellect, ego-maker, and mind. "Belongs to the present time": the ear hears only present sound, not past and not future; the eye also sees present form, not past and not future; the skin [senses] present touch; the tongue, present taste; the nose, present smell, and not past or future. Likewise, the faculties of action: speech utters present sound, not past and not future; both hands grasp a present pot, not past or future; both the anus and the genitals effect present excretion and pleasure, not past and not future. In this way, the external instrument is declared to belong to the present time. "The inner instrument belongs to the three times": intellect, ego-maker, and mind have the three times as their object. The intellect understands a present pot, as well as a past and a future one; the ego-maker produces conceit regarding the present, and regarding the past and the future; similarly, the mind conceives regarding the present, and regarding the past and the future. Thus, the inner instrument belongs to the three times.
