"He proclaims only purity, he preaches only purity, by which at that time
a living being is released from all sufferings. Therefore there is nothing beyond purity,
cleansing"—thus spoke the divine Nārada, the arhat, the seer.
Killing living beings he should neither do nor cause to be done in the three ways by the threefold [means]: this is the first
characteristic of purity. False speech in the three ways by the threefold [means]
he should neither speak nor utter: this is the second characteristic of purity. Taking what is not given
he should neither do nor cause to be done in the three ways by the threefold [means]: this is the third characteristic of purity.
Unchastity and possession he should neither do
nor cause to be done in the three ways by the threefold [means]: this is the fourth characteristic of purity.
Entirely and everywhere, / at all times and in all ways,
he cultivates freedom from sense of possession, / liberation, and abstinence.
Abstinent from everything, disciplined, / completely extinguished in every respect,
wholly liberated in self, / he should walk impartially toward all things.
Adopting all purity, / unmoving, endowed with austerity,
rid indeed of all suffering, / he becomes a perfected one, it is said.
They cultivate only truth; they cultivate only what is given; they cultivate only chastity.
Endowed with the practice of truth, endowed with the practice of what is given, endowed with the practice of chastity.
and possesses chastity. ||12
Thus such an enlightened one, abstinent, sinless, disciplined, substantive, fully protecting, does not again
quickly return to this state—thus I say.
|| The first chapter, on Nārada, is complete. ||1
