He whose senses indeed, O sirs, do not flow toward objects through the fluids, ||*1
"He indeed is the supreme person," said the seer, the arhat Saurikāyana.
How is that? When agreeable sounds reach the domain of the ear...
one should not be attached, one should not be impassioned, one should not covet, one should not be deluded, one should not incur destruction. ||*4
Being attached, being impassioned, ||*5
coveting, being deluded, indulging [in them], while [the senses] stream forth toward pleasant sounds that have reached the ear's range, leads to the taking on of evil karma. ||*6
Therefore, with regard to sounds, pleasant or unpleasant, that have reached the ear's range, ||*7
one should not be attached, one should not be impassioned, one should not covet, one should not be deluded, nor [indulging in them, should one stream forth ... ||*8
be]. So too regarding sights, smells, tastes, and touches. So too regarding the opposite, ||*9
one should not feel aversion. ||*10
The five uncontrolled senses lead the embodied being to saṃsāra;
those very same [senses], when restrained, lead indeed to liberation. ||1
The five uncontrolled senses, subject to attachment and aversion—
just as a tortoise [draws in] its limbs, one should withdraw them into one's own body. ||2
Just as fire engages with fuel and the body with food,
so know the senses and the mind to be joined with their application. ||3
Thus he is perfected, enlightened ... does not quickly return to this state again, so I say. ||*11
