At that time, in that period, an ascetic named Dhammaghosa, the grand-disciple of the arhat Vimala, endowed with [high] lineage—the description is as with master Kesi—up to surrounded by five hundred ascetics, wandering in succession and progressing from village to village, arrived at the city of Hatthiṇāpura, at the Sahasamba-vana park; having arrived, he took up a suitable lodging, and having taken up [the lodging], he lived, purifying his soul through self-restraint and austerity.
Then in the city of Hatthiṇāpura, at triangles, crossroads, squares, courtyards, junctions, main streets, and roads, there was a great sound of people, up to the assembly paid homage.
Then prince Mahabbala, hearing or seeing that great sound of people or gathering of people up to the assembly of people, had the thought just as Jamāli had; just so he summoned a chamberlain, and having summoned him, spoke thus: 'Why, beloved of the gods, is there today in the city of Hatthiṇāpura a festival of Indra, up to [people] are going out?'
Then that chamberlain, addressed thus by prince Mahabbala, pleased and delighted, ascertained the arrival of the ascetic Dhammaghosa, and joining his palms with the ten fingernails crowned on his head, congratulated prince Mahabbala with victory and triumph, and having congratulated him, spoke thus: 'Indeed not, beloved of the gods, is there today in the city of Hatthiṇāpura a festival of Indra, up to [people] are going out. Indeed, beloved of the gods, today the ascetic named Dhammaghosa, the grand-disciple of the arhat Vimala, outside the city of Hatthiṇāpura, in the Sahasamba-vana park, having taken up a suitable lodging, lives purifying his soul through self-restraint and austerity; therefore these many Ugras, Bhogas, up to are going out.'
Then prince Mahabbala in the same way departed in an excellent chariot. The sermon was as with master Kesi. He too in the same way asked his parents for permission, with this difference: 'To become tonsured in the presence of the ascetic Dhammaghosa and to go forth from the household into homelessness.' In the same way were the statements and replies, with this difference: 'And these, son, are daughters of extensive royal houses, skilled in the arts, always pampered, accustomed to comfort.' The rest is just the same, up to then, having no desire [to allow him], they spoke thus to prince Mahabbala: 'Therefore we wish, son, to see the splendour of your reign even for a single day.'
Then prince Mahabbala, yielding to the words of his parents, remained silent.
Then king Bala summoned his household attendants; just as in the case of Sivabhadda, so the coronation is to be spoken of, up to they consecrated him, joined their palms with the ten fingernails crowned on their head, congratulated prince Mahabbala with victory and triumph, and having congratulated him, spoke thus: 'Speak, son, what may we give? What may we bestow?' The rest is just as with Jamāli, up to:
Then the ascetic Mahabbala, in the presence of the ascetic Dhammaghosa, studied the fourteen pūrvas beginning with the Sāmāyika; having studied [them], purifying his soul with many diverse austerities of fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfth fasts, and half-month and month-long fasts, he completed a fully complete twelve years of ascetic life; having completed [it], having emaciated himself through a month-long sallehanā, having cut off sixty meals by fasting, having confessed and repented, having attained spiritual composure, dying at the appointed time, he ascended far upwards, many yojanas, many hundreds of yojanas, many thousands of yojanas, many hundreds of thousands of yojanas, many crores of yojanas, many crores of crores of yojanas above the forms of the moon, sun, planets, lunar mansions, and stars; having bypassed the celestial abodes of Sohammadeva, Īsāna, Saṇaṃkumāra, and Māhiṃda, he was born as a deity in the Baṃbhaloka heaven. There, a lifespan duration of ten sāgaropamas is proclaimed for some deities. There, a lifespan duration of ten sāgaropamas was proclaimed for the deity Mahabbala as well. You yourself, O Sudaṃsaṇa, having lived enjoying divine pleasures in the Baṃbhaloka heaven for ten sāgaropamas, immediately upon passing away from that divine world due to the exhaustion of your life, the exhaustion of your state of existence, and the exhaustion of your lifespan duration, were reborn as a son in a merchant family right here in the city of Vāṇiyaggāma.

"Then, O Sudaṃsaṇa, having cast off childhood, merely understanding and mature, having reached youth, you heard the Dharma expounded by the Kevalin in the presence of such elders, and that Dharma was wished for, accepted, and approved [by you]. Therefore, O Sudaṃsaṇa, you act very well even now! For that reason, O Sudaṃsaṇa, it is said thus: 'There is indeed an exhaustion or diminution of these palyopamas and sāgaropamas.'"
Then, as that setthi Sudaṃsaṇa heard and grasped this matter in the presence of the ascetic, the Lord Mahāvīra, with pure intention, pure mental transformation, with lesyās becoming fully purified, and through the destruction-cum-suppression of the karmas veiling that [knowledge], while performing investigation, consideration, searching, and inquiry, the sentient memory of past births arose [in him], and he fully comprehended this matter correctly.
Then that setthi Sudaṃsaṇa, having his past birth recalled by the ascetic, the Lord Mahāvīra, with doubled faith and spiritual urgency, his eyes filled with tears of joy, circumambulated the ascetic, the Lord Mahāvīra, three times from left to right, and having circumambulated, revered and bowed down to him; having revered and bowed down, he spoke thus: "It is just so, Venerable Sir! It is thus, Venerable Sir! It is not otherwise, Venerable Sir! It is undoubted, Venerable Sir! It is wished for, Venerable Sir! It is accepted, Venerable Sir! It is wished for and accepted, Venerable Sir! It is just as you say!" Having spoken thus, he retired toward the north-eastern direction; the rest as with Usabhadatta down to: he was freed from all suffering; with this difference: he studied the fourteen Pūrvas, fulfilled a full twelve years of monastic life, the rest being just the same.
"It is so, Venerable Sir! It is so, Venerable Sir!"
