At that time, in that period, there was a city named Rājagṛha—a description [as before]. The Master arrived. The assembly came forth. The Dharma was taught. The assembly returned.
At that time, in that period, the eldest disciple of the Śramaṇa, the Lord Mahāvīra, up to: revering him, spoke thus:
"Venerable Sir, those jīvas which are two-sensed, three-sensed, four-sensed, and five-sensed—we know and see their inhalation, exhalation, breathing in, or breathing out.
Those one-sensed jīvas which are earth-bodied, up to: plant-bodied—we do not know and do not see their inhalation, exhalation, breathing in, or breathing out.
Do these jīvas, Venerable Sir, inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out?"
"Yes, Gautama, these jīvas too inhale, exhale, breathe in, and breathe out."
