"Venerable Sir, how many kinds of cāraṇas are declared?"
"Gautama! Two kinds of cāraṇas are declared, namely: vidyācāraṇas and jaṅghācāraṇas."
"Venerable Sir, for what reason is it said, 'a vidyācāraṇa, a vidyācāraṇa'?"
"Gautama! For him, through uninterrupted austerity of a two-day fast (chaṭṭha), enduring with knowledge for the acquisition of subsidiary qualities, the supernatural power named vidyācāraṇa-laddhi arises. For that reason, Gautama, it is said, 'a vidyācāraṇa, a vidyācāraṇa'."
"Venerable Sir, what is the rapid movement of a vidyācāraṇa, what is the range of rapid movement declared to be?"
"Gautama! Just as this continent of Jambūdvīpa, up to somewhat more in circumference: if a god of great power, up to great majesty, up to thinking 'right now, right now', having encircled the entire continent of Jambūdvīpa three times within the span of three finger-snaps, would swiftly return—such, Gautama, is the rapid movement, such is the range of rapid movement declared to be for a vidyācāraṇa."
"Venerable Sir, how much is the range of horizontal movement declared to be for a vidyācāraṇa?"
"Gautama! With one leap from here he arrives at the Mānuṣottara mountain; having arrived, he venerates the shrines there; having venerated them, with a second leap he arrives at the splendid Nandīśvara continent; having arrived, he venerates the shrines there; having venerated them, he turns back from there; having turned back, he comes here; having come, he venerates the shrines here. Gautama, such is the range of horizontal movement declared to be for a vidyācāraṇa."
"Venerable Sir, how much is the range of upward movement declared to be for a vidyācāraṇa?"
"Gautama! With one leap from here he arrives at the Nandana grove; having arrived, he venerates the shrines there; having venerated them, with a second leap he arrives at the Pāṇḍaka grove; having arrived, he venerates the shrines there; having venerated them, he turns back from there; having turned back, he comes here; having come, he venerates the shrines here.
Gautama, such is the range of upward movement declared to be for a vidyācāraṇa. If he dies without having confessed and repented of that state, he has no spiritual attainment. If he dies having confessed and repented of that state, he has spiritual attainment."

"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: 'a leg-soarer, a leg-soarer'?"
"Gautama! To one who cultivates himself with uninterrupted penance of two-day fasts, the power named leg-soaring arises. For that reason, Gautama, it is said: 'a leg-soarer, a leg-soarer.'"
"Venerable Sir, what is the swiftness of movement of a leg-soarer, what is the scope of swift movement declared to be?"
"Gautama! Just as this Jambūdvīpa island, up to slightly more in circumference—if a deity of great miraculous power, up to great majesty, thinking: 'Right now, right now!', having circled the entire Jambūdvīpa island twenty-one times within three snaps of the fingers, should return swiftly—such, Gautama, is the swiftness of movement of a leg-soarer declared to be, such is the scope of swift movement declared to be."
"Venerable Sir, how extensive is the transverse scope of movement declared to be for a leg-soarer?"
"Gautama! In one leap from here he descends upon the excellent Rucaka island; having done so, he venerates the caityas there; having venerated them, returning from there, in a second leap he descends upon the excellent Nandīśvara island; having done so, he venerates the caityas there; having venerated them, he comes here; having arrived, he venerates the caityas here. Gautama, such is the transverse scope of movement declared to be for a leg-soarer."
"Venerable Sir, how extensive is the upward scope of movement declared to be for a leg-soarer?"
"Gautama! In one leap from here he descends upon the Paṇḍaka grove; having done so, he venerates the caityas there; having venerated them, returning from there, in a second leap he descends upon the Nandana grove; having done so, he venerates the caityas there; having venerated them, he comes here; having arrived, he venerates the caityas here. Gautama, such is the upward scope of movement declared to be for a leg-soarer. If he dies without having confessed and repented of that transgression, he has no attainment. If he dies having confessed and repented of that transgression, he has attainment."
"So it is, Venerable Sir! So it is, Venerable Sir!" Up to [Gautama] continues to dwell.
