At Rājagṛha […] he spoke thus: "Venerable Sir! From where do Nāgakumāras originate when reborn? Do they originate from hell beings? Do they originate from animals, humans, [or] gods?"
"Gautama! They do not originate from hell beings; they originate from animals, they originate from humans; they do not originate from gods."
"If from animals?" Exactly as the account of the Asurakumāras, so also of these, up to non-sentient.
"If they originate from sentient five-sensed animals, are they with numerable years of lifespan [or] with innumerable years of lifespan?"
"Gautama! With numerable years of lifespan, with innumerable years of lifespan, up to they originate."
"Venerable Sir! A sentient five-sensed animal with innumerable years of lifespan who is capable of being reborn among the Nāgakumāras—in what lifespan duration, Venerable Sir, would he be reborn?"
"Gautama! At a minimum in a lifespan duration of ten thousand years; at a maximum in a lifespan duration of slightly less than two palyopamas."
"Venerable Sir! How many such souls are reborn in a single instant?"
The remainder should be stated exactly as the pattern of one being reborn among the Asurakumāras, up to regarding rebirths.
"In terms of time, at a minimum a pūrvakoṭi exceeded by ten thousand years; at a maximum slightly less than five palyopamas. For such a duration of time he would reside, for such a duration of time he would make transmigrations."
For that very [being] reborn in the minimum lifespan duration, this is the very account, with the difference that the lifespan duration and the correlation of the Nāgakumāras should be understood.
For that very [being] reborn in the maximum lifespan duration, of him too this is the very account, with the difference that the lifespan duration is at a minimum slightly less than two palyopamas, at a maximum three palyopamas. The rest is the very same, up to regarding rebirths.
"In terms of time, at a minimum slightly less than four palyopamas, at a maximum slightly less than five palyopamas. For such a duration of time he would reside, for such a duration of time he would make transmigrations."
For that very [being] who has himself become of minimum lifespan duration, for him too in all three cases it is entirely just as for one of minimum lifespan duration being reborn among the Asurakumāras.
For that very [being] who has himself become of maximum lifespan duration, for him too there are three cases just as for one being reborn among the Asurakumāras, with the difference that the lifespan duration and the correlation of the Nāgakumāras should be understood. The rest is the very same.
"If they originate from sentient five-sensed animals with numerable years of lifespan, are they developed with numerable years of lifespan [or] undeveloped with numerable years of lifespan?"
"Gautama! Developed with numerable years of lifespan, not undeveloped with numerable years of lifespan."
"Venerable Sir! A developed sentient five-sensed animal with numerable years of lifespan who is capable of being reborn among the Nāgakumāras—in what lifespan duration, Venerable Sir, would he be reborn?"
"Gautama! At a minimum ten thousand years; at a maximum slightly less than two palyopamas."
Thus, just as the account of one being reborn among the Asurakumāras, so here too across all nine cases, with the difference that the lifespan duration and the correlation of the Nāgakumāras should be understood. The rest is the very same.
"If they originate from humans, do they originate from sentient humans [or] from non-sentient humans?"
"Gautama! From sentient humans, not from non-sentient humans." Just as for one being reborn among the Asurakumāras, up to:
"Venerable Sir! A sentient human with innumerable years of lifespan who is capable of being reborn among the Nāgakumāras—in what lifespan duration, Venerable Sir, would he be reborn?"
"Gautama! At a minimum ten thousand years; at a maximum slightly less than two palyopamas."
Thus, just as the first three cases of animals with innumerable years of lifespan [reborn] among the Nāgakumāras, so too for this one, with the difference that in the first two cases the body height is at a minimum slightly more than five hundred dhanuṣas, at a maximum three gavyūtas.
In the third case, the height is at a minimum slightly less than two gavyūtas, at a maximum three gavyūtas. The rest is the very same.
For that very [being] who has himself become of minimum lifespan duration, for him across all three cases it is entirely just as for that very [being] being reborn among the Asurakumāras.
For that very [being] who has himself become of maximum lifespan duration, for him across all three cases it is just as for that very [being] of maximum lifespan duration being reborn among the Asurakumāras, with the difference that the lifespan duration and the correlation of the Nāgakumāras should be understood. The rest is the very same.
"If they originate from sentient humans with numerable years of lifespan, are they developed with numerable [years of lifespan or] undeveloped with numerable [years of lifespan]?"
"Gautama! Developed with numerable [years of lifespan], not undeveloped with numerable [years of lifespan]."
"Venerable Sir! A developed sentient human with numerable years of lifespan who is capable of being reborn among the Nāgakumāras—in what lifespan duration, Venerable Sir, would he be reborn?"
"Gautama! At a minimum in a lifespan duration of ten thousand years; at a maximum in a lifespan duration of slightly less than two palyopamas."
Thus, just as for one being reborn among the Asurakumāras, that very acquisition is completely [applicable] across the nine cases, with the difference that the lifespan duration and the correlation of the Nāgakumāras should be understood.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
24.3.845
The remaining eight uddeśakas, beginning with the Suvarṇakumāras up to the Stanitakumāras, are to be spoken completely just as [those of] the Nāgakumāras.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
