In Rājagṛha, up to: he spoke thus:
"How many, Venerable Sir, are the minor yugmas declared to be?"
"Gautama! Four minor yugmas are declared to be, namely: kṛtayugma, tryoja, dvāparayugma, and kalyoja."
"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said thus: 'Four minor yugmas are declared to be, namely: kṛtayugma up to kalyoja'?"
"Gautama! A quantity which, when divided by the divisor of four, ends with a remainder of four—that is a minor kṛtayugma. A quantity which, when divided by the divisor of four, ends with a remainder of three—that is a minor tryoja. A quantity which, when divided by the divisor of four, ends with a remainder of two—that is a minor dvāparayugma. A quantity which, when divided by the divisor of four, ends with a remainder of one—that is a minor kalyoja. For that reason, up to kalyoja."
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma reborn? Do they get reborn from inhabitants of hell? From animals—the question."
"Gautama! They are not reborn from inhabitants of hell. Thus, the rebirth of inhabitants of hell should be stated as in the 'Descent' chapter."
"In a single moment, Venerable Sir, how many of those jīvas are reborn?"
"Gautama! Four, or eight, or twelve, or sixteen, or numerable, or innumerable are reborn."
"How, Venerable Sir, are those jīvas reborn?"
"Gautama! Just as a jumper jumping, through an operation generated by volition—thus, as was stated for the inhabitants of hell in the eighth uddeśaka of the twenty-fifth śataka, exactly so should it be stated here as well, up to: they are reborn through their own exertion, they are not reborn through the exertion of another."
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma of the Ratnaprabhā earth reborn?"
Thus, as was stated for general inhabitants of hell, that very same exposition should be stated for Ratnaprabhā as well, up to: they are not reborn through the exertion of another. Likewise also for Śarkarāprabhā, thus up to the Seventh Nethemost. Thus rebirth is as in the 'Descent' chapter:
Non-sentient beings indeed [go] to the first; reptiles up to the second; birds to the third;
Lions go to the fourth; but uragas to the fifth earth;
Women to the sixth; and fish and humans to the seventh earth.
This is the maximum descent to be known for the hell-earths.
The rest is exactly the same.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor tryoja reborn? Are they from inhabitants of hell?"
Rebirth is as in the 'Descent' chapter.
"In a single moment, Venerable Sir, how many of those jīvas are reborn?"
"Gautama! Three, or seven, or eleven, or fifteen, or numerable, or innumerable are reborn. The rest is as for the kṛtayugma. Thus up to the Seventh Nethermost."
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor dvāparayugma reborn?"
It is just the same as for the minor kṛtayugma, with this difference: the quantity is two, or six, or ten, or fourteen, or numerable, or innumerable. The rest is that very same, up to the Seventh Nethermost.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kalyoja reborn?"
It is just the same as for the minor kṛtayugma, with this difference: the quantity is one, or five, or nine, or thirteen, or numerable, or innumerable are reborn. The rest is that very same. Thus up to the Seventh Nethermost.
"It is so, Venerable Sir! It is so, Venerable Sir!" Up to: he wanders.
31.2.1004
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having black leśyā reborn?"
Just so, as in the general version, up to: they are not reborn through the exertion of another, with this difference: rebirth is as in the 'Descent' chapter for inhabitants of hell of the Dhūmaprabhā earth; the rest is that very same.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having black leśyā of the Dhūmaprabhā earth reborn?"
Just so, without omission. Likewise also for Tamā, and for the Seventh Nethermost, with this difference: rebirth everywhere is as in the 'Descent' chapter.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor tryoja having black leśyā reborn?"
Just so, with this difference: three, or seven, or eleven, or fifteen, or numerable, or innumerable; the rest is that very same.
Thus up to the Seventh Nethermost as well.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor dvāparayugma having black leśyā reborn?"
Just so, with this difference: two, or six, or ten, or fourteen; the rest is that very same. Thus for Dhūmaprabhā as well, up to the Seventh Nethermost.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kalyoja having black leśyā reborn?"
Just so, with this difference: one, or five, or nine, or thirteen, or numerable, or innumerable; the rest is that very same. Thus for Dhūmaprabhā, for Tamā, and for the Seventh Nethermost.
"It is so, Venerable Sir! It is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1005
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having dark-blue leśyā reborn?"
It is just as for the minor kṛtayugma having black leśyā, with this difference: the rebirth is as in Vālukāprabhā; the rest is that very same.
Inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having dark-blue leśyā of the Vālukāprabhā earth are just the same.
Likewise also for Paṅkaprabhā, likewise for Dhūmaprabhā.
Thus in all four yugmas, with this difference: the quantity should be known. The quantity is as in the black leśyā uddeśaka. The rest is exactly the same.
"It is so, Venerable Sir! It is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1006
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having grey leśyā reborn?"
It is just as for the inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having black leśyā, with this difference: the rebirth is as in Ratnaprabhā; the rest is that very same.
"From where, Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell of the minor kṛtayugma having grey leśyā of the Ratnaprabhā earth reborn?"
Just the same. Likewise also for Śarkarāprabhā, likewise for Vālukāprabhā.
Thus in all four yugmas, with this difference: the quantity should be known as in the black leśyā uddeśaka; the rest is that very same.
"It is so, Venerable Sir! It is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1007
"Venerable Sir! Where do the bhavasiddhika minor kṛtayugma inhabitants of hell arise from—are they from inhabitants of hell?"
[Gautama!] Just as the general section, so too [here] in its entirety, up to: "they do not arise by another's exertion."
"Venerable Sir! The bhavasiddhika minor kṛtayugma inhabitants of hell of the Ratnaprabhā earth?"
Just so, in its entirety. Likewise up to the lower seventh [earth]. Likewise also the bhavasiddhika minor tryoja inhabitants of hell. Likewise up to the kalyoja, with the distinction that the quantity should be known; the quantity has been stated previously, as in the first uddeśaka.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1008
"Venerable Sir! Where do the black-leśyā bhavasiddhika minor kṛtayugma inhabitants of hell arise from?"
Just as the general black-leśyā uddeśaka, so too it should be spoken in its entirety across all four yugmas, up to:
"Venerable Sir! Where do the black-leśyā minor kalyoja inhabitants of hell of the lower seventh earth arise from?"
Just the same.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1009
The blue-leśyā bhavasiddhikas across all four yugmas should be spoken of likewise, as in the general blue-leśyā uddeśaka.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!" up to [the Lord] abides.
31.2.1010
The rebirth of the grey-leśyā bhavasiddhikas across all four yugmas should be stated likewise, as in the general grey-leśyā uddeśaka.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!" up to [the Lord] abides.
31.2.1011
Just as four uddeśakas were spoken for the bhavasiddhikas, so too four uddeśakas should be spoken for the abhavasiddhikas, up to the grey-leśyā uddeśaka.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1012
In this way, four uddeśakas associated with the leśyās should be made for the right-believers, with this distinction: a right-believer should not be made to arise in the lower seventh earth in both the first and second uddeśakas; the rest is just the same.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1013
Four uddeśakas should also be made for the wrong-believers, just as for the bhavasiddhikas.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1014
In this way, four uddeśakas associated with the leśyās should also be made for the kṛṣṇapakṣikas, just as for the bhavasiddhikas.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
31.2.1015
Four uddeśakas should be spoken in this very manner for the śuklapakṣikas, up to: "Venerable Sir! Where do the grey-leśyā śuklapakṣika minor kalyoja inhabitants of hell of the Vālukāprabhā earth arise from?"
Just the same, up to: "they do not arise by another's exertion."
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!" In all, these are twenty-eight uddeśakas.
