35.1.1.1044
"How many, Venerable Sir, great pairs (mahāyugmas) are declared?"
"Gautama! Sixteen great pairs are declared, namely: 1. kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma, 2. kṛtayugma-tryoja, 3. kṛtayugma-dvāparayugma, 4. kṛtayugma-kalyoja, 5. tryoja-kṛtayugma, 6. tryoja-tryoja, 7. tryoja-dvāparayugma, 8. tryoja-kalyoja, 9. dvāparayugma-kṛtayugma, 10. dvāparayugma-tryoja, 11. dvāparayugma-dvāparayugma, 12. dvāparayugma-kalyoja, 13. kalyoja-kṛtayugma, 14. kalyoja-tryoja, 15. kalyoja-dvāparayugma, 16. kalyoja-kalyoja."
"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: 'Sixteen great pairs are declared, namely: kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma up to kalyoja-kalyoja'?"
"Gautama! When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in four, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are also kṛtayugma, that is kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma (1). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in three, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kṛtayugma, that is kṛtayugma-tryoja (2). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in two, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kṛtayugma, that is kṛtayugma-dvāparayugma (3). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in one, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kṛtayugma, that is kṛtayugma-kalyoja (4).
When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in four, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are tryoja, that is tryoja-kṛtayugma (5). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in three, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are tryoja, that is tryoja-tryoja (6). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in two, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are tryoja, that is tryoja-dvāparayugma (7). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in one, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are tryoja, that is tryoja-kalyoja (8).
When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in four, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are dvāparayugma, that is dvāparayugma-kṛtayugma (9). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in three, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are dvāparayugma, that is dvāparayugma-tryoja (10). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in two, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are dvāparayugma, that is dvāparayugma-dvāparayugma (11). When a quantity [is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in one, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are] dvāparayugma, that is dvāparayugma-kalyoja (12).
When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in four, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kalyoja, that is kalyoja-kṛtayugma (13). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in three, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kalyoja, that is kalyoja-tryoja (14). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in two, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kalyoja, that is kalyoja-dvāparayugma (15). When a quantity is reduced by subtraction of fours and terminates in one, and the reduction-instants of that quantity are kalyoja, that is kalyoja-kalyoja (16). For that reason it is said, up to kalyoja-kalyoja."
35.1.1.1045
"Where, Venerable Sir, do kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings arise from? Do they arise from inhabitants of hell?"
As in the Uddeśaka on Utpala, so is the rebirth.
"How many of those jīvas, Venerable Sir, are reborn in a single moment?"
"Gautama! Either sixteen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn."
"Those jīvas, Venerable Sir, moment by moment..."—[the question is asked].
"Gautama! Those infinite [jīvas], being diminished moment by moment, are diminished over infinite avasarpiṇīs and utsarpinīs, yet they would never be fully exhausted. The height is as in the Uddeśaka on Utpala."
"Are those jīvas, Venerable Sir, binders or non-binders of knowledge-obscuring karma?"
"Gautama! They are binders, not non-binders. Thus for all [karmas], except lifespan [karma]. Of lifespan [karma], they are binders or non-binders."
"Those jīvas, Venerable Sir, of knowledge-obscuring karma..."—[the question is asked].
"Gautama! They are experiencers, not non-experiencers. Thus for all [karmas]."
"Are those jīvas, Venerable Sir, experiencers of pleasure or experiencers of pain?"
"Gautama! They are experiencers of pleasure or experiencers of pain. Thus proceeds the sequence of the Uddeśaka on Utpala. They have rising of all karmas, not non-rising. They are premature activators of six karmas, not non-activators. Of feeling-producing and lifespan [karmas], they are premature activators or non-activators."
"Do those jīvas, Venerable Sir, possess black lesyā..."—[the question is asked].
"Gautama! They possess black lesyā, or blue lesyā, or grey lesyā, or fiery lesyā. They are not of right view, not of right-and-wrong view, [but] of wrong view. They are not knowledgeable, [but] ignorant—invariably possessing two ignorances, namely: sensory ignorance and scriptural ignorance. They are not active in mind, not active in speech, [but] active in body. They are attentive with determinate perception, or attentive with indeterminate perception."
"Of how many colors, Venerable Sir, are the bodies of those jīvas?" As in the Uddeśaka on Utpala, throughout—[the question is asked].
"Gautama! As in the Uddeśaka on Utpala: they are inhalers, or exhalers, or not inhaler-exhalers. They take nourishment, or do not take nourishment. They are not restrained, [they are] unrestrained, not partially restrained. They are engaged in activity, not free from activity. They are binders of seven kinds [of karma] or binders of eight kinds. They are occupied with the instinct of food up to occupied with the instinct of possession. They possess the passion of anger up to possess the passion of greed. They are not experiencers of female gender, not experiencers of male gender, [but] experiencers of neuter gender. They are binders of female gender, or binders of male gender, or binders of neuter gender. They are not sentient, [but] non-sentient. They possess sense faculties, they are not devoid of sense faculties."
"How long, Venerable Sir, do those kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings endure in time?"
"Gautama! At minimum, one moment; at maximum, infinite time—infinite avasarpiṇīs and utsarpinīs, the duration of plant-bodied existence. Transmigratory sequence is not stated. Nourishment is as in the Uddeśaka on Utpala, with the difference that: unobstructed, from six directions; subject to obstruction, sometimes from three directions, sometimes from four directions, sometimes from five directions; the rest is likewise. Lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum twenty-two thousand years. Extrusions are the first four. Reaching death by the extrusion leading to death, they die having unified, or they die without having unified. Departing is as in the Uddeśaka on Utpala."
"Now, Venerable Sir, have all breathings up to all beings previously been reborn as kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings?"
"Yes, Gautama! Not once, but rather infinitely many times."
"Where, Venerable Sir, do kṛtayugma-tryoja one-sensed beings arise from?" Rebirth is likewise.
"Those jīvas, Venerable Sir, in a single moment..."—[the question is asked].
"Gautama! Nineteen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; the rest is as for the kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma up to infinitely many times."
"Where, Venerable Sir, do kṛtayugma-dvāparayugma one-sensed beings arise from?" Rebirth is likewise.
"Those jīvas, Venerable Sir, in a single moment..."—[the question is asked].
"Gautama! Eighteen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; the rest is likewise up to infinitely many times."
"Where, Venerable Sir, do kṛtayugma-kalyoja one-sensed beings arise from?" Rebirth is likewise; the quantity is seventeen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite; the rest is likewise up to infinitely many times.
"Where, Venerable Sir, do tryoja-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings arise from?" Rebirth is likewise; the quantity is twelve, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; the rest is likewise up to infinitely many times.
"Where, Venerable Sir, do tryoja-tryoja one-sensed beings arise from?" Rebirth is likewise; the quantity is fifteen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite; the rest is likewise up to infinitely many times. Thus in these sixteen great pairs there is one uniform exposition, with the difference only in quantity: in tryoja-dvāparayugmas, the quantity is fourteen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite that are reborn; in tryoja-kalyojas, thirteen, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in dvāparayugma-kṛtayugmas, eight, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in dvāparayugma-tryojas, eleven, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in dvāparayugma-dvāparayugmas, ten, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in dvāparayugma-kalyojas, nine, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in kalyoja-kṛtayugma, four, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in kalyoja-tryojas, seven, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; in kalyoja-dvāparayugmas, six, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn.
"Where, Venerable Sir, do kalyoja-kalyoja one-sensed beings arise from?" Rebirth is likewise; the quantity is five, or numerable, or innumerable, or infinite are reborn; the rest is likewise up to infinitely many times.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
35.1.2.1046
“Venerable Sir! Whence are first-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?”
“Gautama! In the very same way. Thus, just as the first uddeśaka [was stated], exactly so the second should be recited sixteen times; everything is identical, with only this exception: these ten differences—1. space-occupation is at a minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, and at a maximum also an innumerableth part of an aṅgula; 2. they are not binders of lifespan-karma, but non-binders; 3. they are not activators of lifespan[-karma], but non-activators; 4. they are not inhalers, not exhalers, not inhalers-and-exhalers; 5. they are binders of the seven types [of karma], not binders of the eight types.
“Venerable Sir! In terms of time, how long does their state as first-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings last?”
“Gautama! 6. One instant. 7. Likewise is the lifespan duration as well. 8. The transmigration-disturbances are the first two. 9. As to having experienced [disturbances], they should not be questioned about it. 10. Rising up should not be questioned about; everything else without exception is identical across all sixteen variants, up to an infinite number of times.”
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1047
“Venerable Sir! Whence are non-first-instant kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” This is to be understood just like the first uddeśaka for all sixteen yugmas, up to being a kaliyoga-kaliyoga, up to an infinite number of times.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1048
“Venerable Sir! Whence are last-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the first-instant uddeśaka; with only this exception: gods are not reborn [among them], and tejo-leśyās are not to be questioned about; the rest is identical.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1049
“Venerable Sir! Whence are non-last-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the non-first-instant uddeśaka, so it should be recited entirely without exception.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1050
“Venerable Sir! Whence are first-first-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the first-instant uddeśaka, entirely without exception.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!” up to [the Lord] wanders.
35.1.2.1051
“Venerable Sir! Whence are first-non-first-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the first-instant uddeśaka, so it should be recited.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1052
“Venerable Sir! Whence are first-last-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the last[-instant] uddeśaka, entirely without exception.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1053
“Venerable Sir! Whence are first-non-last-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the second uddeśaka, entirely without exception.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!” up to [the Lord] wanders.
35.1.2.1054
“Venerable Sir! Whence are last-last-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the fourth uddeśaka, entirely without exception.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!”
35.1.2.1055
“Venerable Sir! Whence are last-non-last-instant kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings reborn?” Exactly as the first-instant uddeśaka, entirely without exception.
“That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!” up to [the Lord] wanders.
35.1.2.1056
Thus these eleven uddeśakas [are described]. The first, the third, and the fifth have similar variants; the remaining eight have similar variants; with only this exception: in the fourth, the eighth, and the tenth, gods are not reborn, and there is no tejo-leśyā.
35.2.1057
"From where, Venerable Sir, do black-leśyā kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings arise?"
"Gautama! Their arising is just the same, thus as in the general uddeśaka, with only this difference:
'Are those souls, Venerable Sir, of black leśyā?'
'Yes, they are of black leśyā.'
'For how long, Venerable Sir, does one remain a black-leśyā kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed being in terms of time?'
'Gautama! At minimum, one samaya; at maximum, an antarmuhūrta.' So also the lifespan duration.
The rest is just the same, up to: an infinite number of times.
In this way, all sixteen yugmas are to be stated.
'Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!'
"From where, Venerable Sir, do first-samaya black-leśyā kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings arise?"
As in the first-samaya uddeśaka, with only this difference:
"Are those souls, Venerable Sir, of black leśyā?"
"Yes, they are of black leśyā; the rest is just the same."
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
Thus, just as eleven uddeśakas were stated in the general śataka, so also eleven uddeśakas are to be stated for black-leśyā [beings]. The first, third, and fifth have identical courses; the remaining eight also have identical courses, with this difference: in the fourth, eighth, and tenth, there is no arising of gods.
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
In this way, the śataka for blue-leśyā [beings] is also identical to the black-leśyā śataka; the eleven uddeśakas are just the same.
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
In this way, the śataka for grey-leśyā [beings] is also identical to the black-leśyā śataka.
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
"From where, Venerable Sir, do bhavasiddhi-capable kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings arise?"
Just as in the general śataka, with this difference: in all eleven uddeśakas:
"Now, Venerable Sir, have all breathing beings, up to all entities, previously arisen as bhavasiddhi-capable kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings?"
"Gautama! That meaning is not tenable; the rest is just the same."
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
"From where, Venerable Sir, do black-leśyā bhavasiddhi-capable kṛtayugma-kṛtayugma one-sensed beings arise?"
In this way, the śataka for black-leśyā bhavasiddhi-capable one-sensed beings is also to be stated as identical to the second, black-leśyā śataka.
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
In this way, the śataka for blue-leśyā bhavasiddhi-capable one-sensed beings [is to be stated].
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
In this way, for grey-leśyā bhavasiddhi-capable one-sensed beings, likewise a śataka endowed with eleven uddeśakas [is to be stated]. Thus these four śatakas are among the bhavasiddhi-capable beings. In all four śatakas: "Have all breathing beings, up to [all entities], previously arisen?" That meaning is not tenable.
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
Just as four śatakas were stated for bhavasiddhi-capable beings, so four śatakas associated with leśyās are to be stated for abhavasiddhi-capable beings; "all breathing beings" likewise—that meaning is not tenable. Thus, these make twelve one-sensed mahāyugma śatakas.
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"
