At that time, in that period, in the northern half of Bharaha realm, there lived many Cilāyas named Āvāḍas—wealthy, illustrious, prosperous, possessed of extensive and spacious mansions, beds, seats, conveyances, and vehicles, endowed with abundant wealth, abundant gold and silver, engaged in enterprise and management, lavish with abundant food and drink, having numerous female and male slaves, cattle, buffaloes, sheep, and goats, unvanquished by the multitude of people, valiant, heroic, courageous, possessed of extensive and vast armies and mounts, and successful in aim across many battles and warfare.
Then once, in the realm of those Āvāḍa Cilāyas, hundreds of omens appeared, namely: unseasonal thundering, unseasonal lightning, trees blooming out of season, and deities dancing repeatedly in the sky.
Then those Āvāḍa Cilāyas saw the hundreds of omens that had appeared in the realm. Having seen them, they summoned one another, and having summoned one another, said thus: 'Truly, O beloved of the gods, hundreds of omens have appeared in our realm, namely: unseasonal thundering, unseasonal lightning, trees blooming out of season, and deities dancing repeatedly in the sky. Who knows, O beloved of the gods, what misfortune will befall our realm?' Thus, with defeated intentions of mind, entered into an ocean of worry and sorrow, resting their faces on their palms, fallen into sorrowful dhyāna meditation, and casting their gaze to the ground, they brooded.
Then King Bharata, following the path shown by the cakra jewel, along a path pursued by many thousands of noble kings, making as it were the roar of an agitated great ocean with loud shouts, lion-roars, speech, and tumult, emerged through the northern door of the Timisaguhā cave, like the moon emerging from a mass of dark clouds.
Then those Āvāḍa Cilāyas saw the vanguard of King Bharata's army approaching. Having seen it, enraged, furious, fierce, wrathful, and burning with anger, they summoned one another, and having summoned one another, said thus: 'Who is this, O beloved of the gods, that desires what should not be desired, bearing inauspicious and wretched signs, deficient in merits of the fourteenth lunar day, devoid of shame and prosperity, who comes violently upon our realm? Let us strike him, O beloved of the gods, in such a way that he shall not violently come upon our realm!' Having thus resolved this matter among one another, having put on and bound their protective armor, strapped tight their bow-bands, fastened their neck-guards, bound and tied on their immaculate noble emblem-turbans, and seized weapons and implements of strike, they advanced to where the vanguard of King Bharata's army was; and having arrived, they engaged in battle with the vanguard of King Bharata's army.
Then those Āvāḍa Cilāyas repulsed the vanguard of King Bharata's army in every direction, having slain, crushed, and struck down its noble warriors, having felled its insignia, standards, and flags, and reduced [the soldiers] to clinging desperately to life.
