Then, as the seven nights were coming to an end, there arose in King Bharaha such an internal, reflected, sought, mental thought: ‘Who indeed, sir, seeking what is not to be sought, of vile and wretched marks, born on the inauspicious fourteenth [day], devoid of modesty and prosperity, causes a torrential downpour of rain to fall for seven nights in streams measuring the size of yokes, pestles, and fists upon my victorious military encampment, endowed as I am with such divine godlike prosperity, divine godlike radiance, and divine godlike majesty attained, acquired, and fully accomplished?’
Then, knowing that such an internal, reflected, sought, mental thought had arisen in King Bharaha, sixteen thousand gods set about arming themselves.
Then those gods, equipped, strapped, and cuirassed in armour, having tightened the bands of their bows, wearing neck-ornaments, having tied on and fastened their unstained, noble insignia-bands, and having seized weapons and missiles, approached where the Meghamukha Nāgakumāra gods were. Having approached, they spoke thus to the Meghamukha Nāgakumāra gods:
‘Hey, sir! Meghamukha Nāgakumāra gods! Seeking what is not to be sought, of vile and wretched marks, born on the inauspicious fourteenth [day], devoid of modesty and prosperity! Do you not know King Bharaha, the sovereign Cakravartin of the four directions, of great supernatural power, of great splendor, of great strength, of great fame, of great happiness, of great majesty? Truly, he cannot be harmed or restrained by any deva, or dānava, or kinnara, or kimpuruṣa, or mahoraga, or gandharva, or by the application of weapons, or by the application of fire, or by the application of mantras. Even so, you pour a torrential downpour of rain for seven nights in streams measuring the size of yokes, pestles, and fists upon the victorious military encampment of King Bharaha! Therefore, things being so, depart from here quickly, or else today behold the manifold world of the living [for the last time]!’
Then those Meghamukha Nāgakumāra gods, being addressed thus by those gods, frightened, terrified, alarmed, agitated, overcome with fear, withdrew their army of clouds. Having withdrawn it, they approached where the Āpāta-Kirātas were. Having approached, they spoke thus to the Āpāta-Kirātas:
‘Beloved of the gods! King Bharaha is of great supernatural power, of great splendor, of great strength, of great fame, of great happiness, of great majesty. Truly, he cannot be harmed or restrained by any deva, or dānava, or kinnara, or kimpuruṣa, or mahoraga, or gandharva, or by the application of weapons, or by the application of fire, or by the application of mantras. Even so, beloved of the gods, for the sake of your pleasure an affliction was caused by us to King Bharaha. Therefore, go, beloved of the gods! Having bathed, performed offerings, done auspicious and protective rites, and atonements, wearing wet garments, with the hanging fringes of your lower clothes tucked in, taking choice and excellent jewels, with hands folded, fallen at his feet, take refuge in King Bharaha! Noble men are indeed compassionate to those who bow before them; you have no fear from King Bharaha.’ Having spoken thus, they returned to that very direction from which they had appeared.
Then those Āpāta-Kirātas, being addressed thus by the Meghamukha Nāgakumāra gods, arose with an effort. Having arisen, bathed, performed offerings, done auspicious and protective rites, and atonements, wearing wet garments, with the hanging fringes of their lower clothes tucked in, and taking choice and excellent jewels, they approached where King Bharaha was. Having approached, with palms joined and raised above the head in an añjali salutation, they congratulated King Bharaha with cries of victory and triumph. Having congratulated him, they presented choice and excellent jewels. Having presented them, they spoke thus:
