kaṃsas tu tasmād vatsapād api vatsāsura-nirvāsanam apasarpa-mukhād viṣam iva karṇa-randhra-sparśa-mātreṇāntaḥ sambhūya bhṛśaṃ dṛśau nimīlayāmāsa | tena daśamīm iva daśāṃ prāpitaḥ | sa tu mantribhiḥ kathañcid bahir avadhāpitaḥ sārdham eva tair idam acāru vicārayāmāsa, hanta sambhāvitā dambhānvitā bahavaḥ prasthāpitāḥ, na tu tair bhadraṃ kiñcid api sañcitam | teṣāṃ dhīpsā-vīpsā hi na hīpsāṃ trātavatī, pratyuta tān eva psātavatī | tataḥ kiṃ kurmaḥ?

Kaṃsa, however, as soon as the expulsion of Vatsāsura by that very calf-herder reached his ear-cavities from the mouth of his spy, like poison penetrating within, tightly closed his eyes. By this, he was brought as if to the tenth stage [of death]. But having been somehow revived by his ministers, he unhappily reflected together with them: "Alas, many arrogant ones, held in high regard, were sent, but not the slightest good was achieved by them! For their yearning for deception did not preserve their desire; on the contrary, it devoured them. What, then, do we do?"
