1.17.18

svataḥ karma-vaśād evādātuṃ karmānusāriṇaḥ |
īśaś ced asti karmānugāmy asau kā nu devatā || sarvaṃ tad bhasmani hutaṃ para-tantre yad arpaṇam |
gārhapatye hutaṃ tat tu yad ātmātmīya-poṣaṇam || tasmād ābhīra-vaiśyatvād aghnyāsevā tu naḥ kṛtiḥ |
devatā yadi manyeta mantavyā sā tad-āśrayā || [anuṣṭubh]

"If an individual receives [results] of himself by the force of karma alone following upon karma, and if the Lord follows karma, what deity is there at all? / Whatever is offered to an entity dependent on another is all offered into ashes; but that which nourishes oneself and one's own people is offered into the Gārhapatya fire. / Therefore, because we are Ābhīras and Vaiśyas, our proper duty is service to the cows. If a deity is to be acknowledged, it must be acknowledged as dependent on them."
