[44] tad evaṃ saha-bhārye vṛndāvanaṃ gate tasminn ārye śrīmān upanandaḥ sva-nāmānurūpaṃ śrīman-nanda-vraja-mahendra-sabhāyām ayantrita-mantritayā sthitavān | vicitravīrya-sabhāyāṃ bhīṣma iva | so' pi mantra-miṣeṇa viśeṣeṇa tad-ājñām eva gṛhṇan sarvaṃ sarva-kālaṃ surājā prajā-kulaṃ pālayati sma |

Thus, when that noble man along with his wife had gone to Vṛndāvana, the illustrious Upananda, true to his name, remained in the assembly of the venerable Nanda, the Indra of Vraja, as an unconstrained counsellor, like Bhīṣma in the assembly of Vicitravīrya. And he, too, under the pretext of taking counsel, exceptionally accepted his command alone, and as a good king protected the multitude of his subjects at all times.
