mitalokā khilakṣetrā nirbhojyā darbhanirbharā /
sargārambha iva prāyas tadā Kaśmīrabhūr abhūt //

With few people, barren fields, no food, and overgrown with darbha grass, / the land of Kaśmīra was then almost as it was at the beginning of creation.
