vyāsa uvāca:
vedaḥ smṛtiḥ sadācāraḥ svasya ca priyamātmanaḥ /
samyaksaṃkalpajaḥ kāmo dharmmamūlamidaṃ smṛtam //

The Veda, tradition, proper conduct, and what is pleasing to oneself, / desire born of right intention—this is remembered as the root of dharma.
