vyāsa uvāca:
tapaḥ paraṃ kṛtayuge tretāyāṃ jñānamucyate /
dvāpare yajñamevāhurdānamekaṃ kalauyuge //

Vyāsa said: / Asceticism is declared supreme in the Kṛtayuga, knowledge in the Tretā, / sacrificial rite in the Dvāpara, [and] gift alone in the Kaliyuga.
