Bent low under the weight of her sinking, sinking foot, Mahiṣa split the earth, the ground, and entered Pātāla as if longing to fall into the mire—may that Umā bring you prosperity! “*Nirmajjamajjat*”—that from which marrow (*majjan*) has flowed out is *nirmajja*, and that which sinks (*majjat*); and bowed under the weight of her foot. Of what sort was he? Plunging into the dense forest of her arms, that is, the Goddess's arms, whose bounds extend across the sky. And again of what sort? Fainting from the shower of sparks from the triad of her eyes, which possess the luster of a forest fire. Just as another buffalo, wandering in a forest, scorched by a forest fire, falls into a pit wishing to sink into mud, so did he also, thoroughly scorched by the sparks from the Goddess's eyes, enter Pātāla.
1. variant: *bṛhat*. 2. variant: *hataripurhrepitasvarnikāyā*. 3. variant: *trayeṇa*. 4. variant: *sā śivāstu*.
When the foe of the gods, the cause of shame to Indra's thunderbolt, was swiftly led to a sleep
that was long without deceit, the wrath of the Goddess was dispelled; remembering her own true nature,
from her three eyes, as if three streams of redness flowed away—
may those oceans of crimson water, issuing from the cavities wounded by the trident, protect you! 40
