vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
evam etat purā gītaṃ mārkaṇḍeyena dhīmatā
śrāddhasya phalam uddiśya somasyāpyāyanāya vai //

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: / Thus this was sung in the past by the wise Mārkaṇḍeya / regarding the fruit of a śrāddha, for the nourishing of Soma.
