Karṇa's Burden 23: karṇaḥ

23

śikṣā kṣayaṃ gacchati kālaparyayāt
subaddhamūlā nipatanti pādapāḥ |
jalaṃ jalasthānagataṃ ca śuṣyati
hutaṃ ca dattaṃ ca tathaiva tiṣṭhati || 22 ||

Learning perishes with the lapse of time;
trees, firmly rooted though they be, fall down;
water gone into a reservoir dries up;
but that which is offered in sacrifice and given remains just as it was. || 22
