Then enters Sāgarikā, holding a picture board and acting the state of love.
Sāgarikā: Heart, be appeased, be appeased! What is the use of this persistence in longing for an unattainable person, which bears only anguish as its fruit? And furthermore, when by merely seeing him such torment arises, yet you still desire to look upon that very person—oh, your foolishness! O cruel heart, abandoning this person who grew up together with you from birth, following after a person acquainted only for a mere instant of sight, are you not ashamed? Or rather, what fault is yours? Terrified by the falling of the Bodiless One's arrows, this was resolved by you. Well, I shall first reproach the Bodiless One. (With tears) Blessed Kusumāyudha, having conquered gods and demons, striking at women, are you not ashamed? In every way, for me, unfortunate as I am, death has certainly approached through this misfortune. (Looking at the board) So, as long as no one comes here, I will do what I desire after looking upon that beloved person depicted in the painting. (Gaining composure, being attentive, taking the board with gesture, sighing) Even though my hand trembles exceedingly through intense anxiety, nevertheless, since there is no other means of seeing that person, having drawn him somehow or other, I shall gaze at him. (She acts drawing.)
Then enters Susaṃgatā.
Susaṃgatā: This is indeed the plantain bower; so let me enter. (Entering and looking, with wonder) But why does she, whose heart is overcome with deep love, not see me as she draws? So, avoiding her path of sight, I shall observe. (Standing quietly behind her, looking, with joy) How is this? She has drawn our lord! Well done, Sāgarikā, well done! Or rather, leaving the lotus pool, does a female royal swan delight in any other place?
