Susaṃgatā | Bowing with a smile: Master, away with apprehension! I too was merely joking by the master's grace. So what is the use of the ear-ornament? This alone will be my great favour: my dear friend Sāgarikā is angry with me, saying, "Why was I painted here on the picture board by you?" Therefore, let her alone be conciliated.
King | Rising in agitation: Where is she? Where is she?
Susaṃgatā | Come, come, master!
All rise.
Vidūṣaka | Ah! I shall take the picture board. Perhaps there will be a use for it again.
All exit the plantain bower.
Sāgarikā | Seeing the King, with joy, fear, and trembling, to herself: Alas, alas! Seeing him, I cannot take even a step forward. So what shall I do here now?
Vidūṣaka | Seeing Sāgarikā: A marvel, a marvel! Is such a jewel of a maiden to be seen in the mortal world? So I think that even to the Creator, wonder arose upon fashioning her!
King | Friend, this very thought is in my mind too:
Surely the Creator, having made this woman, an ornament of the three worlds, / widened his eyes which surpass the splendour of his own lotus petals, / spoke all together with his four mouths, “Splendid, splendid!”, / and shook his heads in amazement! // 39
Sāgarikā | Looking indignantly at Susaṃgatā: Susaṃgatā, is this the kind of picture board brought by you? [Wishes to go.]
King
Though in anger you cast this glance, O passionate woman, / yet this affectionate [eye] will not become harsh. / Abandoning haste, walk slowly; by stumblings of your feet, / this heavy hip of yours will become exceedingly weary. // 40
Susaṃgatā | Master, she is exceedingly touchy. So take her by the hand and conciliate her!
