(2.48) Vidūṣaka: Friend, if that is so, do not stop me! (Angrily raising his curved wooden staff) Ah, daughter of a slave-girl, myna! You think that a brahmin is truly afraid? Stand still a moment! With this curved staff, crooked like the heart of a malicious person, I shall make you drop down from this bakula tree like a ripe fruit! (He prepares to strike.)
(2.49) King (holding him back): She is uttering something charming. So why do you frighten her? Let us listen first.
They listen.
(2.50) Vidūṣaka: Friend, she is saying: 'Friend, who is this drawn by you?' 'Friend, is it not the venerable Bodiless God at whose festival we were engaged?' Again she says: 'Friend, why was I drawn here by you?' 'Friend, why do you get angry for no reason? Just as the God of Love was drawn by you, so was Rati drawn by me. So, suspicious girl, what is the use of this evasive talk? Tell the whole story.' Friend, what is this?
(2.51) King: Friend, I surmise thus: by some maiden, the beloved of her heart was drawn out of love and concealed under the pretext of Kāmadeva; and her friend too, recognizing him, out of cleverness drew that maiden herself right there under the pretext of Rati.
(2.52) Vidūṣaka (snapping his fingers): Indeed, this makes sense!
(2.53) King: Friend, be quiet. She is speaking again.
(2.54) Vidūṣaka (listening again): Look, she is saying: 'Do not be ashamed, do not be ashamed! Such a gem of a maiden must certainly have desire for such a bridegroom.' Friend, she who was drawn is indeed a maiden worth seeing!
(2.55) King: If so, let us listen attentively. There is scope for our curiosity.
