Then enters Kāñcanamālā.
(4.58) Kāñcanamālā: I have been commanded by the queen: "Dear Kāñcanamālā, go! Show this magician to my noble lord." [Walking about and looking:] Here indeed is his majesty. So let me approach him. [Approaching:] Victory, victory to his majesty! Your majesty, the queen submits: "A magician named Sambarasiddhi has arrived from Ujjayinī. So may my noble lord watch him."
(4.59) King: We do have curiosity for a magician. Therefore bring him in quickly.
(4.60) Kāñcanamālā: As the lord commands. [Going out and entering with the magician, whose hand is busy holding a peacock-feather broom:] Come, come, sir!
(4.61) The magician walks about.
(4.62) Kāñcanamālā: Here is his majesty; so let the noble sir approach.
(4.63) Magician: Victory, victory to his majesty! [Approaching and twirling his peacock-feather broom:]
Bow down at the feet of Indra, famed in magic,
and likewise of the noble Sambara, whose fame is well established in illusions! || 70 || (4.7)
Lord:
Shall the moon [be shown] on the earth, a mountain in the sky, fire in water,
[or] evening at midday? Give the command, let it be shown! || 71 || (4.8)
(4.64) Vidūṣaka: Oh friend, be cautious! His confidence is such that anything seems possible.
(4.65) Magician: Lord:
What need of much talk? Whatever you desire in your heart to see,
that very thing I shall display by the power of my guru's mantras! || 72 || (4.9)
(4.66) King: Kāñcanamālā, let the queen be told: "This magician is yours indeed, and this spot has been cleared of people. Therefore come, let us watch him together."
(4.67) Kāñcanamālā: As his majesty commands. [Going out and entering with Vāsavadattā:]
(4.68) Vāsavadattā: Dear Kāñcanamālā, because he has come from Ujjayinī, I have a partiality for that magician.
(4.69) Kāñcanamālā: This is indeed the queen's high regard for her maternal family. So come, mistress. [They walk about.]
(4.70) Kāñcanamālā: Mistress, here is his majesty. So let the queen approach.
(4.71) Vāsavadattā [approaching]: Victory, victory to my noble lord!
(4.72) King: Queen, he has roared boastfully. So remaining right here, let us watch him.
(4.73) Vāsavadattā sits down.
(4.74) King: Good sir, let your manifold magic begin.
(4.75) Magician: As the lord commands. [Performing various dramatic gestures and twirling his peacock-feather broom:]
I shall display the gods headed by Hari, Hara, and Brahmā, and the king of gods,
and in the sky a host of Siddhas and Vidyādharas dancing! || 73 || (4.10)
[All watch with astonishment.]
(4.76) King [looking up and rising from his seat]: Wonder of wonders!
(4.77) Vidūṣaka: A marvel, a marvel!
(4.78) King: Queen, look:
Here is Brahmā on a lotus; this is Śaṅkara crowned with the crescent moon;
this is the slayer of the Daityas with four arms marked with bow, sword, mace, and discus;
and here, mounted on Airāvata, is the lord of the gods; so too, queen, these other gods;
and these heavenly women dance in the sky, the anklets chiming on their moving feet. || 74 || (4.11)
(4.79) Vāsavadattā: A marvel, a marvel!
(4.80) Vidūṣaka: Ah, son of a slave-girl of a magician! What use is there in showing these gods and apsarases? If you have any business with pleasing him, show Sāgarikā!
