1.145

varaṃ vanaṃ vyāghra-gajendra-sevitaṃ
drumālayaḥ patra-phalāmbu-bhakṣitam |
tṛṇāni śayyā vasanaṃ ca valkalaṃ
na bandhu-madhye dhana-hīna-jīvanam //

Better is a forest inhabited by tigers and lordly elephants,
Dwelling in trees, eating leaves, fruits, and water,
Straw for a bed and bark for a garment,
Than a life without wealth in the midst of kinsmen.
