na dharma-śāstraṃ paṭhatīti kāraṇaṃ
na cāpi vedādhyayanaṃ durātmanaḥ |
svabhāva evātra tathātiricyate
yathā prakṛtyā madhuraṃ gavāṃ payaḥ //
The fact that an evil-natured person reads the treatises on righteousness is no reason [for trust], / nor is his study of the Vedas; / his innate disposition alone prevails here, / just as the milk of cows is naturally sweet.
