ity āśīrvādapūrvakaṃ rājño haste phalaṃ dattvā 'bravīt: bho rājan, ahaṃ kṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṃ mahāśmaśāne 'ghoramantreṇa havanaṃ kariṣyāmi. tatra tvayo 'ttarasādhakena bhavitavyam. rājñā ca pratijñātaṃ tasmai. evaṃ tābhyāṃ śmaśānaṃ gatam, tatra nṛpahavanam ārabhya svayam eva hutaḥ. tena prasaṅgena rājño vetālaḥ prasanno jātaḥ, aṣṭamahāsiddhayaś ca prāptāḥ.

having thus bestowed a blessing, placed a fruit in the king's hand and said: "O king, on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight I will perform a fire sacrifice with the Aghora mantra in the great cremation ground. There you must be my assistant." And the king gave him his promise. Thus the two of them went to the cremation ground; there, having begun the sacrifice of the king, [the ascetic] was himself offered as oblation. On that occasion a vetāla became pleased with the king, and the eight great supernatural powers were obtained.
