boddhāro matsara-grastāḥ
prabhavaḥ smaya-dūṣitāḥ |
abodhopahatāḥ cānye
jīrṇam aṅge subhāṣitam ||

The discerning are seized by envy;
those in power are ruined by pride;
and others are struck down by ignorance:
so the well-turned verse has decayed within the body.
