In a sacred village or a great forest, taking a begging-bowl whose rim is covered with a white cloth, / in neighborhoods smoky with the oblations to the fire offered by righteous twice-born men, / it is better for a starving, proud man, sustained by his breath of life, / to enter door after door to fill the cave of his belly, but never to live wretchedly day after day among his peers.
