yad etat svacchandaṃ viharaṇam akārpaṇyam aśanaṃ
sahāryaiḥ saṃvāsaḥ śrutam upaśamaika-vrata-phalam |
mano manda-spandaṃ bahir api cirasyāpi vimṛśanna
jāne kasyaiṣā pariṇatir udārasya tapasaḥ ||

This wandering at will, food obtained without abasement,
fellowship with noble men, knowledge whose sole fruit is the practice of tranquility,
and the mind sluggish in its outward movements—reflecting for a long time,
I know not from what generous ascetic austerity this ripening has come about.
