He whose guide was Bṛhaspati, whose weapon was the thunderbolt, whose soldiers were the gods, / whose citadel was heaven, whose favor was surely Hari's, whose war elephant was Airāvata— / even he, endowed with such power and strength, was broken by enemies in battle! / It is clear, then, that fate alone is our refuge; fie, fie upon futile human effort!
