[…] destroying the host of diseases. / Twenty superior long peppers boiled in half an āḍhaka of water; / when one-fourth remains, that is boiled with an equal amount of goat's milk / and should be drunk daily by a patient suffering from consumption; he should eat always with that alone, / or without food and water, according to his strength; devoted to that, he is freed [from illness]. / Or one who has surpassed twelve years of age, unctuated, fomented, and purified, / should drink [them] with milk, increasing five by five [long peppers daily], / and likewise reduce [them by five from] a hundred, avoiding food and water. / This regimen of increasing long pepper destroys all diseases. / Or one hundred long peppers may be boiled always in an āḍhaka of water; / when one-fourth remains, one should boil it again with an equal amount of milk. / If kapha is predominant, with honey; if vāta is predominant, with medicated ghee; / if pitta is predominant, taking it with sugar, he becomes healthy. / The regimen of increasing long pepper is beneficial when vāta and kapha are predominant; / long pepper with milk is beneficial everywhere, after examining time and other [factors]. / At the beginning of autumn, having dug up roots of nāgabalā, one should dry them. / Placing them in a new vessel, remaining celibate, self-controlled, / avoiding women and Śūdras, in a secluded place, one should make him drink the powder with milk: / on the first day a karṣa, and thereafter one should increase it; / then, being pure, one should make him drink pala by pala daily with milk. / When that has digested, he should drink milk, avoiding cooked food and water. / In one month, nāgabalā destroys consumption with its complications in men, / and bestows offspring, lifespan, strength, and intellect to the diligent. / In six months, he retains what he has heard and is freed from all diseases; / even an eighty-year-old man would become a youth in one year. / For maṇḍūkaparṇī, dry ginger, brāhmī, and liquorice, / the procedure has the same virtues, destroys all diseases, and is equal to that of nāgabalā. / Rubbed with goat dung, sprinkled with goat urine, / he should drink goat's milk and nothing else, and reside with goats; / living beneath a pit of goats, a consumptive patient is freed. / For this goat-derived rasāyana destroys wasting and increases strength. / Two hundred crushed superior harītakī fruits; / the ten roots, milk hedge, dantī, karañja, adhoguḍā, asana, / mayūraka, devadāru, nicula, kuṭaja, aṭajī, / kaṭaṅkaṭerī, bṛhatī, rāsnā, śyonāka, citraka, / and varuṇa—pounding [these], each twenty-five palas, / one should boil this in six droṇas of water until five āḍhakas remain. / Straining that, adding a tulā of jaggery, one should cook it again. / Observing that it has reduced, one should place it in a vessel containing medicated ghee. / One should throw in black pepper, viḍaṅga, bhārgī, along with seeds of holarrhena, / kuṭa seeds, and a prastha of long pepper; / mixing in a prastha of honey, one should administer it after a month. / Consuming wholesome food, in proper measure at the right time, he is freed from diseases born of kapha. / This, termed Mahābhayāriṣṭa, was formulated by Kaśyapa. / Prickly chaff-flower, aśvagandhā, nākulī, white mustard, / sesame seeds, and bael should form a paste, beneficial as an unction in wasting diseases. / One hundred palas of garlic, dehusked and crushed, / one should boil in ten droṇas of water until one-fourth remains. / There one should boil two āḍhakas of medicated ghee along with the vitalising drugs, / a droṇa of goat's milk, and a decoction of the ten roots. / One should add them; that medicated ghee, kept concealed, is to be administered after a month. / This, known as Indrāṇīghṛta, destroys consumption (rājayakṣman); / it grants the desires of barren women, eunuchs, and the aged who eat wholesome food. / Or one should treat him with garlic according to the prescribed procedure: / in half an āḍhaka of cow's medicated ghee, having added a crushed āḍhaka of garlic / into the ghee vessel, one should conceal it within grains for a year, / or six months, eight months, or four months; / then it is to be drunk like nāgabalā, and he is freed from all diseases. / One should cook grape medicated ghee according to the formula for Indrāṇīghṛta; / likewise pīlu medicated ghee, and he is freed from all diseases. / Sacrifices, the Rohiṇī ablution, observance of auspicious rites for them both, / worship of Rudra, fortitude, purity, and celibacy are for pacification. / The six and eleven symptoms of the consumptive patient that have been declared / are themselves the complications; if they are not pacified, their own treatment [is to be done]. / Thus said the venerable Kaśyapa. / Thus ends the Treatment of Consumption among the Therapeutics.
