śilājaṃ kaphavātaghnaṃ tiktoṣṇaṃ kṣayaroganut /
{śilājatu:: testing for purity}
vahnau kṣiptaṃ bhavedyattu liṅgākāraṃ hyadhūmakam /
salile'tha vilīnaṃ ca tacchuddhaṃ hi śilājatu //

this rock bitumen destroys phlegm and wind, is bitter and hot, and removes wasting disease.
When cast upon fire it becomes phallus-shaped and truly smokeless,
and when dissolved in water, that indeed is pure rock bitumen.
