1.21.23

karṇikāyāṃ likhetpūrvaṃ vaṭukāyeti vīpsitam /
aṣṭapatre likheccheṣāṇyakṣarāṇyaṣṭapatrake //

one should first write in the pericarp, followed by the desired 'vaṭukāya'. / On eight petals one should write the remaining letters on the eight petals.
