Medicine is twofold: promoting vigor and destroying disease.
Both, moreover, partake of both natures;
yet the designation is according to the predominance.
Among them, that which promotes vigor is twofold: rasāyana and aphrodisiac.
That which destroys disease is also twofold:
pacifying disease and preventing its recurrence.
And it is again twofold:
material and non-material.
Among them, material is threefold:
mineral, vegetable, and animal.
Among them, that which will be stated, beginning with gold and ending with salt, is mostly mineral.
Vegetable, moreover, is of four kinds through the distinction of trees bearing fruit without flowers, trees bearing flowers and fruits, creepers, and herbs.
Among them, a tree bearing fruit without flowers is a vanaspati;
that having flowers and fruits is a vānaspatya;
creepers and shrubs are vīrudh;
and herbs are those ending with the ripening of fruit.
Arising from living creatures, substances like honey and clarified butter are called animal substances.
The messenger's caste, dress, speech, action, place, and time, and the physician's meeting with him, intention, preparation, departure, and entry, planetary motion, unprecedented occurrences, and dreams indicate good or ill for the sick person.
They arise from indigestion, polluted foods, and from the accumulation of waste products.
And now according to the procedure for diarrhea:
For the digestion of the undigested food matter, one should drink a decoction of mustā, ativiṣā, and viśvabheṣaja;
or that powder with warm water;
or ginger with that [water];
likewise the vacā group with rock salt;
or, with the scum of vāruṇī wine, the tri-salt powder and others mentioned in the procedure for abdominal swelling.
And one should employ unctuous nasal medicines, fumigations, collyria, ocular saturation, and closed-vessel decoctions;
and enemas prepared with vāta-dispelling substances, and sudation of the eyelids with castor-plant shoots steamed in milk.
