Medicine administered into the nose is nasya; / it also receives the designations nāvana and nastahkarma. / For the nose is the doorway to the head. / Medicine poured therein reaches the srotas-confluence [śṛṅgāṭaka], pervades the head, and draws out the entire pathogenic collection of doṣas residing above the collarbones from the supreme organ [the head] quickly—just as an internal stalk is drawn out from muñja reed—which has become stuck to the openings of the channels of the eyes, ears, throat, and other parts.
